Jerome- best tour guide in Africa!
The vineyards around Hermanus are just gorgeous
Sorry I
didn’t have time to make a blog post yesterday everyone. Even though it was a
no sea day, it was still very eventful! Based on the weather, we could tell a
few days in advance that we wouldn’t be going out to sea this weekend- tomorrow
is still questionable. It’s not raining or anything, but with the wind and
strong swells, it’s just not the safest conditions to be out on the boat (our
boat doesn’t go out if the swells are more than three meters). So, since we
already knew we wouldn’t be going out, Tom planned some other activities for us
to do this weekend. Yesterday morning, at about 9:30, the four vols (me, Mayke,
Dax and Mike) jumped in the WSP van and Jerome drove us over to Hermanus to
visit some vineyards and do some wine tastings around the area. There’s a lot
of wine grown and made in South Africa, and the vineyards around Hermanus are
just beautiful. At the first tasting, we sat out on the upper patio, which gave
a great view of the winelands that stretched out all around us. It was getting
close to lunch time when we finished there, so Dax suggested that we visit a
beer brewery nearby to do a beer tasting and get lunch in the restaurant that
was also there. It turned out to be a great plan. We took advantage of the
beautiful surroundings and great day by again sitting outside.
At lunch
Jerome got a call from Tom saying that he was going to start the evening braai
soon. Yesterday was Tom’s birthday, and so he wanted to do a braai for everyone
for dinner, but do it earlier than usual, since we all wanted to go out into
town afterwards to watch a game that was on and celebrate his birthday.
We started
heading back to Gansbaai after lunch, arriving home at about two o’clock. Tom
already had a fire going in the pit in the backyard by the time we got back, so
the vols spent most of the afternoon out back having fun, playing a round of
flunkeyball, and meeting Tom’s girlfriend, who came to visit for his birthday.
The dinner bell rang at about 5:30, and we all dug in- damn, Tom is a great braai
master!
A little
before seven, the four vols piled into Jerome’s car and headed into town to
meet everyone else at a pub. When I got there I saw Jan, who had been an
employee at WSP last time I was here. I’d seen him at the first braai we had a
couple of weeks ago, but it was nice to see him again. Knowing today was
another no sea day, we didn’t need to worry about getting up early, so we hung
out at the pub for about four hours before deciding to call it a night and head
home. It was just about the perfect way to spend a no sea day.
So far today
has been pretty uneventful. I slept in a bit this morning, then went and hung
out with the other vols at their house for a while. At about 4:30, I’m going to
head back up there, because we have a plan to go fat biking in De Kelders this
evening. The vols are getting picked up at about 4:45 for a sunset tour of the
dunes; Tom did it last week, and said it was great. It looks a bit scary, but
he said it looks scarier than it actually is. Sounds like it’ll be another fun
evening! This post’s food for thought: “Life is a game, play it; life is a
challenge, meet it; life is an opportunity, capture it.”- Unknown
